Suicide is the 8th leading cause of death in the United States. Approximately 30,000 people died by suicide in the United States in 1997.
For every completed suicide it is estimated that there are 8 to 25 attempted suicides. People with depression and people with other mental health problems are at increased risk for death by suicide.
